What If the Best of San Miguel Isn’t on Instagram? The Memories We Treasure Are The Ones We Simply Lived

After years of organizing journeys, I’ve noticed the same pattern over and over again. During the first few days, everyone wants to see the places they’ve spotted on social media. The perfect picture, the trendy café, the colorful doorway that has already been photographed thousands of times. Quite often those places are simply not interesting.

And then, almost inevitably, something else happens.

The memory that stays is rarely that famous Instagram spot. Instead, it’s a conversation with a flower vendor, a musician playing in a quiet alley, a dog sleeping peacefully in the shade, the extraordinary light at the end of the afternoon, or a cup of coffee enjoyed without looking at the time.

Over my own experience, I’ve learned that you don’t truly discover a city by rushing from one attraction to another. You discover it by slowing down, allowing yourself to wander, sitting quietly and watching the people who actually live there.

To me, the true art of travel is trying, even if only for a few days, to live as though you belong to the place. Buying your bread at the same bakery, recognizing familiar faces, greeting local shopkeepers, taking time to admire the jacaranda trees or listen to the church bells instead of searching for the next perfect photo. San Miguel de Allende offers that gift to anyone willing to give it time. Social media often makes us believe that we have to see everything.

Life teaches us something very different: what matters most is often found elsewhere. And the memories we treasure most are not always the ones we shared online, but the ones we simply lived...

With joy always,
