As Eye See It: November, a Magical Month to be Here

By Frank "Sugar" Hudson
November is a fantastic time to be in San Miguel de Allende. The rainy season has drawn to a close, blue skies return, and comfortable daytime temperatures settle over town. With Mexico’s rich cultural traditions and an exciting international music festival on the calendar, November offers plenty of reasons to celebrate.
Ideal Autumn Weather
November brings sunny days, crisp evenings, and very little rain. Daytime temperatures typically reach the mid-seventies (°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop into the fifties. The gentle contrast between daytime warmth and nighttime chill is part of the distinct charm of living in this high-altitude colonial city.
Día de los Muertos & La Calaca
The month begins with one of Mexico’s most meaningful traditions: Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Celebrated on November 1 and 2, this colorful observance honors loved ones who have passed.
In San Miguel, families build elaborate altars decorated with bright cempasúchil (marigolds), candles, photographs, favorite foods, and personal mementos.
Local cemeteries become vibrant gathering places of remembrance, while throughout Centro, visitors can enjoy artistic installations, face painting, traditional foods, and festive processions. Events associated with the La Calaca Festival often begin in late October and continue into early November (the term calaca refers to the whimsical skeletal figures central to Day of the Dead celebrations).
International Jazz & Blues Festival
Music lovers have even more reason to celebrate this month: the International Jazz and Blues Festival is scheduled for November 11th–15th, 2026.
The festival brings talented Mexican and international musicians to San Miguel for intimate concerts, workshops, and lively performances at venues across the city. It is a world-class musical experience set against our iconic colonial backdrop.
Día de la Revolución
On November 20th, Mexico commemorates the start of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, honoring the historic struggle that reshaped the modern nation.
Civic ceremonies and local parades often mark the occasion, while schools, banks, and government offices adjust their schedules (note that the official statutory holiday is observed on the third Monday of November).
A Wonderful Time to Be Here
November seamlessly combines pleasant weather, deep cultural heritage, and a dynamic community calendar.
Whether you are taking in world-class music, exploring local history, enjoying seasonal delicacies, or simply watching the world go by from a sidewalk café, San Miguel de Allende offers something truly special this time of year.
