On Sunday, January 18th, San Miguel de Allende was honored by the visit of Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She came to visit the site where the new Centro de Excelencia de Parteria y Bienestar—Center of Excellence in Midwifery and Wellness will open.
The project, promoted by IMSS Bienestar Health Services, embraces the 'CASA' project, which was launched more than 30 years ago by Alejandro González and Nadine Goodman, together with dozens of midwives.
The center will strengthen primary care, preconception care for women, prenatal care, labor and delivery, and maternal health. It will be a place where babies will be born under the best possible conditions, with proper preparation of the mother and immediate care of the newborn. All of this will be achieved through midwifery education with professional training and development, as well as the promulgation of traditional knowledge. Services for women will be free as part of public health.
This is a significant step in recognizing midwifery as part of a comprehensive model for public health, and the visit of President Sheinbaum highlights her commitment to and promotion of health in all its aspects. The center is housed in a building that still needs full remodeling to bring it up to par for the services it will provide, and the opening is projected sometime in late March of this year.
