The Ergonomics Behind Truly Great Garden Tools

I’ve spent much of my working life building things—custom homes, fine furniture, and implements meant to be used daily and trusted for decades. But the vision for Armadillo Garden Tools didn’t fully develop until 2015, while living in a small coastal town on the west coast of Costa Rica. I closely observed hardworking gardeners and demanding landscapes and recognized something that stayed with me. While great care was given to plants, soil, and growing conditions, the tools themselves were largely overlooked. Innovation was rare. Quality was inconsistent. Very few tools were designed with the human body in mind—how we stand, grip, apply force, and repeat motions hour after hour.
Being a tool fanatic, that realization sent me experimenting. One design led to another, and I found myself drawn toward old-world craftsmanship and a simple belief: tools should feel as honest and enduring as the work they support. I imagined… how would an indigenous tool maker create an implement for a specific task, to be carried proudly on their person. Even today, the global market offers surprisingly few garden tools that are robust, well balanced, and worthy of real pride of ownership. Most people cannot explain why one tool feels and functions better than another, but nearly everyone recognizes a poorly designed one the moment it’s in hand. Weight, balance, material choice, and ergonomics operate quietly—almost subliminally—yet they directly influence posture, hand fatigue, efficiency, and whether gardening feels restorative or physically taxing over time. An implement’s efficiency is central to both productivity and comfort. When a tool works with the body rather than against it, movements feel natural, effort is reduced, and fatigue fades into the background.
Armadillo tools are handcrafted from premium bronze and hardwood and designed from the user outward—accounting for body mechanics, grip strength, soil conditions, and a wide range of physical abilities. We found the craftsmen and women with the skill and sensibility to bring this vision to life in San Miguel de Allende and surrounding pueblos. Over time, we’ve become family. We take as much pride in making these tools as we hope you’ll feel in owning one. As I often say, good tools disappear in the hand. Poor ones fight you. Over time, that battle affects not just posture and comfort, but the simple joy of the work itself. Your garden is your canvas. Your tools are the brushes. For curious gardeners, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to demonstrate our unique collection of artful tools & talk gardening.
