Tucked away just beyond the familiar rhythms of San Miguel de Allende, there is a place where time slows, flavors deepen, and every detail feels infused with intention. Sikelia Gastronomy Club & Garden is not just a restaurant, it is a story of love, nature, and authentic Italian cooking, brought to life in one of the most unexpected corners of town.
At the heart of Sikelia are Chef Laura and her husband Justino, an Italian couple whose journey feels almost cinematic. They met on a sun-drenched beach in México, and what began as a chance encounter evolved into a shared life built around passion, for food, for nature, and for each other. Destiny, it seems, gently guided them to San Miguel, where they created something truly special. Chef Laura leads the kitchen with a philosophy rooted in simplicity and care. Her cuisine reflects the essence of Italy, honest, soulful, and ingredient-driven. As they beautifully express it: Italian cuisine prepared with love, using fresh, local ingredients, inviting guests to indulge in the authentic flavors of Italy and enjoy an unforgettable dining experience. Justino, meanwhile, brings another dimension to Sikelia. Beyond co-creating the restaurant, he has cultivated a stunning cactus nursery and endemic garden that surrounds the space. The connection between land and table is tangible here, nature is not just a backdrop, but part of the experience itself.
We visited for Easter lunch, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like the perfect kind of celebration, intimate, relaxed, and quietly magical. I couldn’t help but think how much more special it would have been if Paola had joined us… next time, without a doubt.
We began with a selection of starters that immediately set the tone. The crispy Parmesan balls served with beef fillet tartare were indulgent and packed with flavor, but the true standout for me was the classic Sicilian parmigiana. Layers of perfectly cooked eggplant, melted mozzarella, Parmesan, and rich tomato sauce came together in what might just be the best version I’ve tried—not only in San Miguel, but anywhere. A fresh Sikelia salad followed, a vibrant combination of tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, olives, onions, goat cheese, and pecans, all brought together with extra virgin olive oil and a delicate balsamic reduction. It was the perfect balance to the richness of the previous dishes.
For our main course, we shared the carbonara, an absolute must. Made the traditional way with egg yolk, pecorino, Romano cheese, and guanciale, it was cooked to a flawless al dente. Each bite carried the depth of the cheese and the satisfying crispness of the guanciale. Comforting, yet refined, exactly what great Italian food should be.
Though we didn’t try the pizzas this time, they are next on our list. Justino oversees them personally, working with a large wood-fired oven that promises the kind of rustic, perfectly blistered crust that pizza lovers dream about. Dessert was a flourless chocolate cake paired with vanilla ice cream, rich, decadent, and the perfect ending to the meal. Everything was complemented by a chilled Merlot and a Malbec, rounding out an experience that felt both elevated and deeply personal.
Sikelia is, admittedly, a bit off the beaten path. Located in Montecillo de Milpa, along the road from Atotonilco, it requires a small detour, but one that is absolutely worth it. Reservations are essential (they are open only on weekends), and once you book via WhatsApp, you’ll receive the exact location and details. What awaits is not just a meal, but a moment, a chance to step into a space where passion, craftsmanship, and authenticity converge. Relaxed yet thoughtful, casual yet exceptional, Sikelia has quickly become one of our favorite culinary escapes in San Miguel.
For those willing to venture just a little further, the reward is unforgettable.
