Q: Why did you decide to focus on Medicare education for Americans living here?
A: I live this lifestyle myself. My wife, Susan, and I divide our time between California and San Miguel, so I understand the questions and concerns firsthand.
Q: What's the biggest misconception U.S. expats have about Medicare?
A: Many people assume that because they're living in Mexico, Medicare no longer matters - or that it will somehow cover them here. In reality, traditional Medicare generally does not cover care received in Mexico, and your residency choices can have important implications for certain types of Medicare coverage.
Q: You often refer to "the elephant in the room." What do you mean?
A: The biggest issue many expats don't discuss is residency. Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans have different rules and considerations, and maintaining an appropriate U.S. residence can be an important part of remaining eligible for certain coverage.
Q: What inspired you to create Medicare 101 for Expats?
A: After speaking with fellow expats, I noticed the same questions coming up over and over again. Rather than simply helping people enroll in plans, I wanted to create an educational presentation that explains how Medicare works, where it doesn't work, and how Americans living abroad can make informed decisions with confidence.
Q: How does your own experience influence your advice?
A: I'm not just talking about Medicare from behind a desk. I'm a Medicare beneficiary myself, and I spend half the year living in San Miguel. That gives me a practical understanding of how to balance healthcare needs in the United States with life overseas. I approach every conversation as a peer who has faced many of the same questions.
Q:Â If readers remember only one thing from this interview, what should it be?
A: Don't assume your Medicare options are the same just because you're living outside the United States. The rules can be nuanced, and a decision that seems minor today could affect your coverage or costs later. Taking the time to become informed before enrolling or switching plans can make a tremendous difference and provide real peace of mind.
