San Miguel Taste: San Miguel y Sus Sabores, A Celebration Of Community, One Plate At A Time

The energy was unmistakable. Walking into Parque Benito Juárez on Sunday during the 5th edition of San Miguel y sus Sabores, it was immediately clear why this festival has become one of the city's most anticipated culinary events. Over three days (June 12–14), more than 35 restaurants, local producers, traditional cooks, and artisans transformed the park into a vibrant celebration of what makes San Miguel's food scene so special.

Organized by the Municipal Government through the Tourism Department and CANIRAC San Miguel de Allende, the festival succeeded brilliantly in its mission: to strengthen the city's gastronomic identity and remind locals and visitors alike why San Miguel is a world-class culinary destination.

The crowds told the story of its success. While the foot traffic was impressive sometimes almost overwhelming, it also reflected something important: the festival is growing, and people want to be part of it. That said, there's room for improvement. As the festival expands in future years, distributing the food stalls beyond the basketball court area would ease congestion and create a more comfortable experience. The potential is there to stretch across more of the park's beautiful space.

But the food? That was flawless. I navigated lines at the Marketplace for paella and hummus, grabbed my annual spinach salad from the San Mezcal booth, and indulged in a surprisingly delicious sloppy joe. The desserts from Marulier were decadent, the prosciutto and mozzarella focaccia from Curado (on Salida a Celaya) was the perfect starter, and the eggplant with mushrooms in matcha salsa was unforgettable. Churros from Porfirio, mini burgers from San Francisco Steakhouse, and pork belly rib-eye tacos rounded out the adventure.

What struck me most wasn't just the food, though, it was the sense of community. Live music, people dancing, families exploring together, the genuine pride of restaurant owners seeing their work celebrated. This is what San Miguel y sus Sabores really represents: not just exceptional cuisine, but a city that knows how to gather, celebrate, and share. Already looking forward to next year.
