Our May edition offers a deep meditation on the concept of community. As Charles Woollett concludes on pages 30 & 31, “I am because we are”—a sentiment echoed by Angela Higley Ferro on page 8, who observes that life in San Miguel is less about networking and more about fostering a deep, enduring sense of belonging. Don Krim carries this thread further on page 68, arguing that the best way to break through cultural barriers is to sustain a multicultural identity through language, local customs, and the intentional intermingling of our neighborhoods. As he notes, the city’s vibrant nonprofit sector offers every resident a path to get involved.
This month’s stories bring that spirit of involvement to life. We highlight the recipient of the Rotary’s Citizen of the Year Award, explore how the Biblioteca Pública is bridging the digital divide with free internet and technology classes for children, and take a closer look at the local impact of the 100+ Who Care organization. It is all about being present—rising to become more than we ever expected we could be. That is what I call the “San Miguel Effect.”
To help you navigate the season, Carla Pérez offers essential advice on page 35 for staying hydrated at 6,500 feet as the heat settles in. If you are looking for a weekend escape, Randolph Rogers invites us to "A Movable Feast Just Fifteen Minutes Away," highlighting the charm of Viñedos San Lucas and the joys of our local wine country. On a more personal note, I hope you turn to page 66 to find a story written by a remarkable 12-year-old whom I have watched grow since the day she was born; seeing her transform into a "Tiny Dancer"—to borrow a line from Elton John—is a testament to the talent blooming in our town.
This lively edition is only possible thanks to our volunteer writers, who truly embody the community spirit we celebrate. We also extend our deepest gratitude to our advertisers, whose stories of essential services, education, and real estate fuel the city's economy. We all play a vital role in this local tapestry.
