With the start of the high season for English-language theater in San Miguel de Allende, the Teatro Santa Ana welcomes a vibrant mix of independent producers and established theater companies who continue to consider our stage their artistic home.Over the next three months, these artists—many of them longtime collaborators—will bring creativity, dedication, and passion that enrich the cultural life of both residents and visitors. We extend our deepest thanks to the producers, directors, actors, and loyal audiences whose support keeps this tradition alive.

The season opens January 16–17 with acclaimed playwright Roger M. Williams, returning with two short but powerful plays.Gone! follows an American tourist lost in a Spanish city, blending tension and humor, while Me? A Traitor?! explores the legacy of General Robert E. Lee.

Directed by Marjorie Burren, the cast includes Frank Simons, Rick Franz, Josefina Valentini, and Burren herself.

A pillar of the local arts community, SMA Playreaders celebrates forty years of staged readings. What began in private homes has grown into a beloved public program known for its volunteer spirit, minimal rehearsal, and selections ranging from comedy to the boldly experimental. Upcoming performances will take place January 21–22, February 18–19, and March 18–19.

For nearly four decades, The Players Workshop has remained a cornerstone of English-language theater in San Miguel. Founded in 1986 by the legendary Lola Smith, the company continues to grow under Artistic Director Richard Hochberg and Board President Antonia Banewicz, balancing creative ambition with limited resources. Their upcoming production, Central Park West by Woody Allen, runs January 28–31.

Solo theater also plays a prominent role this season. On February 3, Susan Jeremy presents Robert Will Show You the Door, her seventh solo show, shaped by her background in stand-up comedy and her gift for creating engaging, heartfelt characters. Her work traces different chapters of her life with humor and emotional honesty.

From February 12–14, acclaimed actress Catherine Bryne brings to the stage her celebrated adaptation of A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf. Presented internationally, the piece continues to resonate nearly a century after its publication, driven by Bryne’s deep connection to Woolf’s ideas and language.

Also on February 12, Texas-based Marfa Live Arts—recognized for innovative performance and free arts education—presents Par La Ventana, directed by Jennie Lyn Hamilton, a multimedia exploration of ancestral memory through the lens of the Mexican Revolution.

New perspectives continue with Eli Hans and Joseph Bennett, whose international success with Out of the Blue has fueled their ongoing contribution to San Miguel’s theater scene. Their recent SMA Solo Theatre Festival brought outstanding performers from major U.S. cities to share transformative work with local audiences.

Closing the season, the SMA Playwrights Showcase—created by playwright Mark Saunders (founder of the SMA Diez Minutos International Play Festival) and active since 2012—will present original short plays celebrating the creative journey from page to stage, with performances February 25–28.

Bringing youthful energy, Wonderland Productions—founded in 2025 by Ansley Braverman and Stephanie MacLean—takes the stage March 27–28 with Aladdin, reflecting the theater’s commitment to developing emerging talent among young performers.

Through this diverse and vibrant program, Teatro Santa Ana proudly reaffirms its mission: to be a home for English-language theater and a gathering place where community, creativity, and gratitude come to life.
