Curated Journeys in Mexico City: Discovering A Fascinating City

As the plane descends into the 2-to-5-million-year-old Valley of México, the city appears all at once, stretching across the high plateau. In the distance, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl rise majestically, volcanoes that have watched over this valley for hundreds of thousands of years.

The mexica founded Tenochtitlan around 1325, on an island in Lake Texcoco, once a vast shimmering blue expanse encircled by mountains. Long before the Spanish arrived, the inhabitants had built a sophisticated hydraulic system with canals, aqueducts, and chinampas. When the Spaniards drained the lakes, and built their own systems, the valley began to transform, and today, México City slowly sinks under its layers of history.

From above, the city is breathtaking. Green parks, purple-flowered trees in spring, fountains, and towers of glass and steel rise beside streets that seem to follow no single plan. México City is a place where centuries coexist, where nature and history meet, where creativity seems limitless.

The city is alive with sound. The whistle of the camote vendor, the bells of garbage trucks, distant sirens, birds singing everywhere, dogs barking, music floating from open windows, people laughing and talking. At first overwhelming, then utterly captivating, profoundly human.

And the people themselves reflect the city’s richness. México is a land of endless métissage. Indigenous and Spanish roots, African, Middle Eastern, European, Asian, and American influences have mixed over centuries, creating an astonishing diversity of identities. In one neighborhood you may feel in Europe, in another in a Mexican town, in another in a modern city, yet all belong to the same place.

Seen from above, México City feels less like a single city than like centuries living side by side. Only when you move through it do you realize that each neighborhood has its own atmosphere, rhythm, and life. It is astonishing, fascinating, sometimes exhausting, chaotic, elegant, and absolutely one of the most interesting cities on Earth, forcing anyone to look up in awe.
