Blooming Beauty: Get Ready for the San Miguel de Allende Orchid Market!

Mark your calendar for a beautiful—and educational—weekend at the San Miguel Orchid Market! This year’s event will be bigger and better than ever. The market will be this Saturday, September 6^th and Sunday the 7^th—from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days, at Ancha de San Antonio 30— at the south end of the Instituto Allende, closest to Cardo.

Bigger—and Better!

While orchids remain the star, the market has blossomed over the years to include vendors offering cacti and succulents, bonsai, terrariums, pots and orchid supplies, and even orchid jewelry.  This year will also feature new vendors selling organic vegetable and herb plants as well as worms and worm castings.

The Stirling Dickinson San Miguel Orchid Society, which sponsors the market, is an education-focused group of orchid enthusiasts. Traditionally, the market has offered a basic orchid care class. This year, the educational offerings include five diverse classes/workshops.

Join Jim Roberts, founder, for an hour-long class, Cultivating Orchids Successfully as well as a three-hour, hands-on repotting workshop. Unsure when or how to repot your orchids?  Bring them to the workshop and learn the best techniques and materials to use.

Manuel Hernández has been a valued vendor since the first market in 2014. He will once again present his popular  Cultivo de Orquídeas en San Miguel class for Spanish-speaking orchid lovers.    

New Classes:  Beyond Orchids

For the first time, the market will feature two classes not focused on orchids. Jim McKeever, co-owner of Camino Silvestre, has spent the last 18 years successfully growing vegetables, herbs and flowers in compact spaces.

His session will focus on San Miguel’s growing seasons and creating an urban vegetable garden.

Preston Englebretson, founder of the Cacti and Succulent Society of San Miguel,  will lead a session on Growing the Cactus and Succulents of Mexico. Preston started growing and propagating succulents and then cactus over five years ago.
