San Miguel de Allende is surrounded by a large wine growing area in the State of Guanajuato. I have visited several wineries outside of town on the roads to Querétaro and Comonfort. Currently there are many wineries in the area with more being developed every day.
My friends and I decided to visit Vinedo San Miguel, which is on the road to Comonfort about five miles south of town. Viñedo San Miguel is the largest winery in the state of Guanajuato. The area has a dry temperate climate with warm spring and rainfall in late summer. With an altitude of 6000 feet above sea level and loamy soil in the area it is excellent grape growing country. This is the type of soil that produces fruit with thick skin resulting in an excellent quality of wines, both in color, aroma and taste. The vineyard has a spectacular landscape with a majestic lake, natural waterfalls, vegetation and architectural structures that will make your visit an unforgettable experience.
They combine winemaking tradition with contemporary design and the characteristic warmth of México. They offer unique wine experiences such as tastings, guided tours, special events and signature gastronomy. Recognized for its award winning wines, it is a must-see destination for lovers of wine, culture and nature.
The winery, associated with the neighboring residential development, is a sister winery of Villa Petriolo in Italy. It is a complex of vineyards, homes and a really beautiful and contemporary tasting room, a wine store and production facility.
The winery also features a restaurant, Trasiego. The restaurant overlooks the underground production facilities and the rows of stored wine in oak barrels. It looked like a wonderful place to bring my sweetheart for dinner, but today, it was just the guys out on an outing. We decided on splitting a bottle of the rose wine, enjoying the free slices of pizza. None of our group are rose drinkers but we all agreed that Viñedo San Miguel’s Rose was the finest we had ever tasted.
The winery is open from Wednesday through Sunday. Reservations should be made for the restaurant and wine tastings.
