Atención Vibrant Living: Kind Nutrition as Everyday SelfCare

One of the easiest ways to care for ourselves in San Miguel is also one of the most ordinary: the way we feed ourselves each day. In a town full of mercados, fresh produce, good restaurants, and colorful food, proper nutrition can be easy. But it does need to be intentional.

Many of us think about food in extremes. We tell ourselves we should eat perfectly, cut out everything we enjoy, or follow the latest rule we heard from a friend, a headline, or a podcast. Then life gets busy, lunch becomes whatever is easiest, and dinner turns into a reward for surviving the day. That pattern is very human, but it is not always the most caring one.

Good nutrition is not punishment, and it is not perfection. It is one of the clearest ways we show respect for the body that carries us through our days. It supports energy, mood, digestion, immunity, and long-term health. It can also help us feel steadier, stronger, and more capable in everyday life.

In my work as a trainer and nutrition coach, I remind clients that all the macronutrients matter. Protein matters. Good carbohydrates matter. Healthy fats matter. The goal is not to fear food, but to build meals that support us.

Protein deserves special attention, especially as the years go on. We need protein to maintain and build muscle, and muscle is not just about appearance. It supports strength, balance, metabolism, mobility, and independence. Maintaining muscle mass is as important as maintaining bone density, because both help us stay upright, steady, and able to do the things we care about. That is one reason I encourage people to include a good source of protein at each meal whenever possible. Generally, we do well to aim for about one gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight. There are resources online that can help you estimate what that is for you. In San Miguel, that might mean eggs and beans at breakfast, a lentil salad at lunch, and fish or chicken for dinner.

But protein is only part of the story. Good carbohydrates are important too. Whole grains, beans, fruit, and vegetables provide fiber and steady fuel. They help keep energy more stable and digestion happier than a diet built mostly around sugar and refined flour. Healthy fats matter as well. Avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and other quality fats support the brain, hormones, and satiety. We do not need to fear these foods. We need to use them wisely and consistently.

So, what does proper nutrition look like in a simple, everyday way?

It means building a plate with some balance. Start with vegetables or fruit. Add protein. Include a smart carbohydrate. Add a little healthy fat. Drink water. That is not trendy, but it works.

It also means eating in a way that suits the life we live. In San Miguel, that may mean shopping at the mercado for foods that are fresh, local, and in season. It may mean choosing a nourishing comida rather than pastries on the run. It may mean keeping beans, eggs, yogurt, nuts, fruit, vegetables, and other basics in the house so that the easiest option is not always the least supportive one.

And yes, pleasure still belongs at the table. Nutrition is not only about restriction. It is also about sufficiency, satisfaction, and the quiet relief of knowing you are feeding yourself with care instead of neglect.

Perhaps that is the deeper point. Proper nutrition is not just about what the scale says or whether we followed every rule. It is about the message we send ourselves, day after day. Am I caring for this body? Am I giving it what it needs to stay strong? Am I helping my future self?

That is a much kinder question than, “Did I eat perfectly today?”

So here is a gentle practice for the next two weeks.

Tiny assignments for the next two weeks:

  • Once a day, build a plate with protein, a healthy carbohydrate, and either vegetables or fruit, or both.

  • Choose one simple “care meal” you can repeat during the week, perhaps beans and vegetables, yogurt with nuts, or grilled fish with rice and salad.

  • Before one meal each day, pause and ask, “What would be a caring choice for my body right now?”

Even these tiny assignments are real care, not perfection. Let them be small consistent steps toward a life that feels more vibrant.
