Teen Connections With ‘Teen Connect’

ree

By Mae Hart

“Any help is good help,” said Kirsten McCormick, founder of Teen Connect. When she first moved to San Miguel de Allende she noticed how there weren't many activities for teens, so she started a teen meet up group for San Miguel. Kirsten wanted her own kids to have the opportunity to make friends and have engaging activities to look forward to outside of school. Shev has an inspiring story of working with teens by being a choir teacher, voice teacher, and she has taught swimming lessons, how to be a swim instructor, and a camp director.

Very soon Kristen will be hosting a meeting for parents or grandparents to attend. It will be an informational workshop about Teen Connect and how it is a safe space for the teen in your life.

“The hardest part about Teen Connect is making things happen,” Kirsten commented, “I never imagined that doing something this big in the community would be easy.” After interviewing Kirsten (as a teen myself), I was able to take a look into her daily life and imagine how it could be difficult for her to get these ideas out of her head and into real life plans. But, Kirsten has worked with teens/kids all her life, and in that time, she has realized that teens aren't just ‘rebellious’ or ‘mean’, or ‘selfish’ (as sometimes labeled), but that they are amazing, curious, and kind humans.

If the teen in your life has free time, is 16 years of age or up, and wants to do volunteer work, Kirsten is always open for help.  She does a yearly “amazing race" in which teens race around San Miguel in an exciting adventure. Through Teen Connect, Kristen organizes small events almost every 3 weeks. If your grandchild is visiting I would highly recommend going to a teen connect event, it's fun, and many friends are made at Teen Connect and everyone is welcome to Teen Connect events!

Kirsten’s favorite part about working and organizing Teen Connect is seeing that if teens are in the right environment they will make a great change.

“When interested adults simply show up and create space for teens to be who they are, this is when they thrive”.  She hosts many events that can impact your teen/grandchild’s social life or friendships.  Teen Connect is a great community for your teen for if they need a break.  It is always a safe space for teens - to grow, to learn or to make new friends. Kirsten makes sure every detail of what she plans is safe and friendly for any teen!

She says that volunteering with Teen Connect could help a teen to start a business or get a job. Volunteering with Teen Connect will get your teen/grandchild that experience that they need, and will look great on a resume. If you are unsure about your teen/grandchild going to a Teen Connect event, remember, they can leave at any time, there will always be more than one adult and Kirsten is a great person with which to leave your teen/grandchild. By the way, an upcoming event she is helping to organize is an exciting trip to Japan.
