There is no chef that’s left more of an impact on the culinary profile of San Miguel de Allende than Chef Donnie Masterton of The Restaurant. He has influenced so many people, including young people zwho are working in culinary careers in San Miguel. The level of respect for him runs deep.
In the 14 years I’ve been writing about the culinary scene in San Miguel, I’ve learned one thing: it’s hard to miss how many aspiring young cooks have passed through his kitchens and gone on to build careers of their own.
Chef Donnie Masterton goes into the new year with a life changing mission: he’s started a new NGO called Let the Kids Cook - Deja Que Los Niños Cocinen, A.c, a project which will open doors in the culinary and hospitality world for young people who have the passion but not the means. With grants, mentorship, and other support, it will help young cooks pursue education, professional training, and real-world experiences.
Given his history, there is no better chef to run Let the Kids Cook than Chef Donnie Masterton. Here are the primary targets from his Mission Statement for Let the Kids Cook:
Educational and Career Grants: Supporting culinary school, hospitality programs, and professional training.
Stage and Study-Abroad Support: Airfare, housing, and basic living expenses for approved international or domestic placements.
Tools of the Trade: Chef coats, uniforms, knife kits, shoes, and essential equipment.
Mentorship and Guidance: Connecting young cooks with working chefs and industry professionals.
Community Fundraisers and Donor Support: Events and partnerships that directly fund individual opportunities.
The first fund raising event for Let the Kids Cook is on Superbowl Sunday, February 8th at The Restaurant. Call Janna at 415 117 6443 or email at jannajmz@ gmail.com for more information and to purchase tickets. Janna can also address any other questions including donations relating to Let the Kids Cook.
