Jorge R. Gutiérrez at Galería Blue Moon: A Solo Show for Día de los Muertos

By Staff Writer
Galeria Blue Moon welcomes Mexican animator, writer, producer, director, and painter Jorge R. Gutiérrez to San Miguel de Allende for the first time. His solo show will feature more than 30 new paintings created specifically for the occasion.
Gutiérrez's visual style was forged on the border. Born in México City and raised in Tijuana, he grew up immersed in the vivid, mixed-up world of border pop culture: hand-painted vendor stalls, bootleg toys, and the mash up of Mexican and American imagery. This collision of cultures shaped him as an artist and gave him a unique point of view that transcends both worlds.
A CalArts Experimental animation BFA and MFA graduate, Gutiérrez's distinct point of view has powered a decades-long career on screen. His work includes directing and co-writing The Book of Life, produced by Guillermo del Toro; co-creating the Emmy Award–winning Nickelodeon series El Tigre; and creating Netflix's Emmy Award–winning mini-series Maya and the Three. He is currently developing the feature film Speedy Gonzales for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation.
His paintings have a striking visual language defined by lucha libre masks, lotería cards, calaveras, and Mesoamerican motifs rendered in saturated color with bold, confident line work. The show includes pieces like Amor Eterno, which directly reflects Día de los Muertos themes of love, memory, and loss in a style that is both irreverent and deeply heartfelt. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the US, México, and Spain, and is held in numerous notable private collections.
San Miguel de Allende and Día de los Muertos share the same vivid, unflinching embrace of color, memory, and mortality that defines Gutiérrez's work, making this exhibition feel less like a visiting artist's stop and more like a homecoming.
Collection available for viewing at Galeria Blue Moon Stirling Dickinson 7, October 22nd through November 8th.
The public is invited to meet the artist at a special reception at Galeria Blue Moon on Friday, October 30th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
