Just how does a sculptor get the sculpting bug? There are many avenues that lead to the creation of art in three dimensions, but the most prevalent is undoubtedly the natural progression from making functional pottery to sculpting with clay.
Jane sold her own original tableware designs and pottery successfully all across Canada for twenty-five years. Then, after being inspired by visiting the Mask Museum in San Miguel in 2008, she began creating her first clay bird sculptures. The public response was immediately positive and eventually sculpture became a feature at all of her shows across Canada.
Her bird sculptures were made to hang on walls. In 2010 she began sculpting women from unique & tribal cultures around the world and in 2018, she expanded her skills beyond wall pieces, to encompass building free-standing pieces featuring animals, birds and women. Jane seeks to capture the spiritual dimension of her subjects with empathy, inviting the viewer to relate and reflect. Her work can be found in collections in Japan, Australia, Switzerland, the UK, Israel, México and the USA. During her career she has also shown her work at numerous Ceramic Galleries across Canada.
In 2016, after moving to San Miguel with her husband Dave, she was invited to show her sculptures at Galería San Francisco where she soon developed a loyal following locally, as well as internationally.
Later on, that year she began creating a series of Chine-Colle Monoprints, merging black and white images of her sculptures with vibrant colored images, to create two-dimensional renderings that captured the essence of her subjects. Ultimately, she progressed to creating traditional monoprints.
Jane Bingham is having an openingalong with Darlene McElroy at Galería San Francisco at the Art Walk at Fábrica La Aurora, Saturday, January 31st 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
