Our September music spotlight is on the ever-stunning Lyka Violinista—a Russian-born diva and one-woman show who will leave your jaw on the floor and your heart wanting more.
Whether she’s playing in a packed venue, an open-air rooftop or someone’s home, she knows how to transform a performance into something unforgettable. Watching her perform is an immersive experience that feels both intimate and cinematic as she steps off stage and interacts with the audience.
FF: Thank you for this interview Lyka. When did you first realize you wanted to become a violinist?
LV: When I was five, my family met a famous composer while on vacation. He asked my parents, “Are you planning to send Lyka to music school?” At first, they hadn’t considered it, but he encouraged them. We tried twice, but the school was closed. The third time, it was open—and I made it in.
FF: “The third time’s the charm,” as they always say! Whew—good thing you didn’t give up. Thinking back now, how old were you when you first stepped onto a stage or in front of an audience, ready to share your music with the world?
LV: I was 13. My first performance was at my music school during a concert exam, and the reaction from the audience was unforgettable—I could truly feel their energy. From that moment on, I was hooked. Since then, I’ve performed with orchestras, on cruise ships, in theaters—you name it—and I’ve also had the joy of teaching violin to students of all ages.
FF: What advice has stayed with you to this day?
LV: One teacher told me, “Many people will try to put you down—don’t let them.” That’s stuck with me.
FF: I’m glad you listened. It’s so important that we believe in ourselves as musicians knowing where we came from, how hard we have worked to get to where we are now and to remain strong in our power. You are confident and such an inspiration to everyone who hears you. I’ve seen you perform with some of SMA’s finest musicians, including international touring artists such as Gil Gutiérrez. In what other incarnations have you played?
LV: I’ve been part of orchestras, women’s violin ensembles, a string duo called Lighthouse String Duo and have supported many bands on stage. My dream for the near future is to perform my concert at a big performance hall. For now, I love to work with my husband Jorge—he’s a DJ and the technical producer for my solo shows.
FF: That’s wonderful that you and your husband are a creative team. That creates such a deep bond. I’m positive you will get your wish too, I feel it in my bones.
So how did you end up performing and living in México?
LV: My husband is Mexican, and we have family here. We wanted to see how it felt to live here, so we tried México City, Puerto Vallarta, and Playa del Carmen. In 2019, we came to SMA—and it had a special flavor we preferred so we stayed here.
FF: Where was the first place you played music in San Miguel?
LV: Los Milagros on Relox, we still perform there.
FF: I’ve seen you there—you were outstanding. We love going to Los Milagros. We always bring our out of town guests and family there for Mexican food and music. They were very smart to have hired you and to have kept you on this long. You must be doing something right to say the least. They are so lucky to have you there.
LV: Thank you Felecia you are a wonderful person.
FF: I think you are too and I’m a big fan of yours. When can we all hear you this month?
LV: Come hear us on:
Tuesdays & Thursdays: Los Milagros Terraza, 6:15–8:00 p.m.
Wednesdays & Fridays: Los Milagros Relox, 6:15–8:00 p.m.
Fridays: Atrio Rooftop, 8:30–9:30 p.m.
FF: WOW, that’s a full schedule! You must be one of the hardest-working musicians in town. It’s been an honor to get to interview you Lyka. I hope you and Jorge stay blessed and continue to bless our community with your presence and song. You are a rare gem in this treasure trove we call our community. Your presence adds a richness to the live music scene and is a gift we all feel—because in the end, music does more than entertain—it heals.
