As Eye See It: Summer Magic, What to Expect in July

In July, San Miguel comes alive with a rhythmic charm where the biggest headliner is actually the weather. Days are beautifully warm, drawing everyone outdoors. Then, like clockwork in the afternoon or evening, dramatic summer showers sweep in to cool the air before vanishing just as quickly as they arrived. While July is technically the wettest month of the year—with about 22 days of rain totaling around four inches—the downpours are brief. They leave behind a stunning gift: the surrounding countryside transforms into a lush, vibrant green, and the temperatures stay perfectly comfortable. July also brings a rich tapestry of events and deeply rooted traditions.

Cultural & Culinary Highlights

SMA Food Festival. Mid-July: Food lovers won’t want to miss this culinary celebration, held during the third weekend of July at Hacienda Los Picachos. It features chef demonstrations, wine tastings, gourmet local products, and live music.

GIFF, Guanajuato International Film Festival. Starts July 20: While this massive celebration of cinema spans several cities across the state, it frequently brings outdoor screenings, filmmaker talks, and exclusive premieres straight to the streets of San Miguel.

The International Chamber Music Festival. Begins July 27: Brings world-class musicians together for concerts, masterclasses, and workshops. Running through August 27, the performances take place primarily inside the breathtaking Teatro Ángela Peralta.

Traditional & Religious Celebrations

Feast of Our Lady of Carmen. Around July 16: Neighborhood churches honor this day with vibrant religious processions, live music, traditional street foods, and plenty of family-oriented activities.

Feast of Atotonilco. Third Sunday of July: A short trip outside the city, Atotonilco hosts one of the region’s most colorful spectacles. Pilgrims, traditional conchero dancers and fireworks converge around the famous sanctuary—known as the "Sistine Chapel of Mexico" for its stunning murals.

Death of Miguel Hidalgo. July 30: Marks the anniversary of the death of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1811. The father of Mexican Independence was executed just 35 days after his compatriot, San Miguel's own Ignacio Allende, suffered the same fate.
