Live theater, since the beginning of time, has been, and remains, the cultural spine of a community, whether story telling around a campfire, on the Broadway stage or in magical San Miguel de Allende. For fifteen years, Caja Negra, professional repertory theater group of actors and technicians has strived to present thoughtful, dynamic theater to San Miguel.

I believe that quality theater can be presented in a grand space or a street corner. Life is theater and is all around us every day. The “art” is recreating the stories into a believable performance.

Not an easy task! Acting is the most difficult of performing arts. It calls on the performer’s inner life, imagination and physical capabilities. “Behaving believably in an imaginary situation!”

After a long career that has allowed me to study with the best: Sanford Meisner and Uta Hagen, and perform on New York stages and Stratford Festival, I continue to learn with the talented actors that have performed for Caja Negra.

Our previous Caja Negra productions, performed in San Miguel de Allende, México City, Guadalajara and Ajijic: House, Diary Of A Madman, I Am My Own Wife, By The Waters Of Babylon,  An Act Of God,  Kiss Of The Spider Woman, My Brilliant Divorce, Frankie & Johnnie,  Deconstructing O, Building The Wall,  The Tricky Part, Wiesenthal The Nazi Hunter, The Maiden,  3 Hotels,  After Chekhov.

“A Picasso” presents a new challenge. It’s based on events that happened almost a hundred years ago. As I research the time period and the era of “Degenerate Art” I am realizing that the play is not so much a “period piece”. It seems to be happening again today!  That said, the play is aptly labeled as “a cat-and-mouse drama about art, politics, sex and politics”

“A Picasso” by Jeffrey Hatcher takes place in 1941 at an abandoned theater in Paris. The audience - 50 people - will be seated on a sparse stage at Teatro Angela Peralta with the actors.

Very intimate; Very site specific; Very Caja Negra.
